A rural property or a marquee on a paddock is the most creatively open styling brief there is, and the most demanding. A reception centre gives you power, lighting, flooring, kitchens, toilets, wet weather cover, staff and a floor plan that has worked a thousand times. A field gives you a view.
- Power decides a great deal
- Lighting, catering and AV all need it, and many rural sites cannot supply enough. That usually means a generator, which needs positioning far enough from the marquee that nobody hears it, and cabling that does not run across a walkway. This gets established before any styling is designed.
- Ground conditions decide what can stand
- Grass, slope and soft ground all limit what will safely hold up. Structures need weighting or staking specified for the actual site, and a wet week beforehand can change what is possible. A site visit is worth far more here than photographs.
- Wind is the real risk, not rain
- Open country is exposed. Lightweight backdrops, tall arrangements and anything with a large surface area need structural allowance, or they spend the ceremony being held upright by a groomsman. This is the most common outdoor styling failure and it is entirely predictable.
- Wet weather is a full second plan
- Not an idea, a plan: what physically moves, how long the move takes, what time the decision is made and who makes it. Where the alternative needs its own install, that is scoped and quoted up front.
- Everything arrives on a truck
- Access matters enormously. A narrow farm gate, a soft track or a long carry from where a truck can stop all add hours and labour to an install, and they need to be known before the quote rather than discovered on the day.

The reason people do this is that the result is unrepeatable. A ceremony under established trees with open country behind it, a long table under a marquee at dusk, and a setting that no ballroom can imitate.
The styling instinct that works here is restraint outdoors and generosity indoors. Outside, the landscape is doing the work and heavy styling competes with it. Under a marquee, where the ceiling is fabric and the walls are usually nothing, lighting and suspended work earn far more than they do in a finished room.
Lighting is the highest value investment in a marquee. Festoon, suspended installations and considered lighting transform a tent more than any amount of table detail, and it becomes essential as the light goes, which in a field means genuinely dark.
